Our New HQ Project

In July 2024 we were delighted to announce the official launch our campaign to build a new community facility!

We love our current HQ. It’s been our place for Scouting for over 68 years. Learning, camping, singing, axe-throwing, drumming, fire-lighting, crafting, thinking, painting, star-gazing, shooting, cooking, painting, dancing, marsmallow toasting and so much more - those four walls have seen it all!

It’s kept us warm and dry through everything, but it’s definitely seen better days. We’re getting to the point where a lick of paint and some elbow grease just won’t cut it. Our trusty building is slowly but surely falling apart.

For now, we’ll keep doing what we do. Working together, mucking in, making do. We know the end is coming for our beloved home though, so we’ve made plans for a new one. Now it’s time to put those plans into action.

Our Vision - The Max Egremont Scout & Guide Centre

We have a vision for a new Scout HQ for Petworth, built in place of our current building. The land was originally given over for use by the Scout Group by Lord Leconfield in 1955. Now, with the kind support of Lord Leconfield once again, we have secured this location for the next three decades, which will allow us to pursue this ambition.

By updating our facilities we can make sure that all our young people, as well as the wider community, have a safe, clean activity space to enjoy for years to come. A larger hall would let us run bigger, better activities. An accessible toilet would open our doors to a wider cross section of the community. New storage spaces would make room for our equipment - an ever-growing collection as our member numbers keep increasing!

Not only that, but a new, up to date building would mean we can do more to help the environment by using less energy and water.

The Plans

Our current activity hall is roughly  4.8m x 10.9m (15’11” x 35’10”). These plans will give us a larger hall of 8m x 12m (26’4” x 40’). Plenty to comfortably accommodate our growing numbers and even more fun!

A bigger kitchen and accessible cloakroom facilities will make a better space for Scouts and create an inviting venue for use by the community.

Indoor and outdoor stores will provide plenty of space for crafting materials, games, camping equipment and all our other gear.

We care about our environment and are keen to do what we can to help with the climate crisis. We plan to use technologies such as water recycling, eco-friendly heating, efficient water fittings and solar panels in our build.

Making it Real

We needed a plan; we made one. We needed planning permission; we have it. The next challenge is fundraising. That’s where you come in!

We will be doing everything we can to raise money for this project, but we need the support of you, our wonderful community.

It’s going to be a big team effort to bring this project to life - imagine the feeling of looking back and knowing you helped make it happen.

We need your support to make this happen!
